City of Ottawa Theatres

Centrepointe Theatre

Professionally managed and operated and volunteer supported, Centrepointe Theatre is a world-class venue with a warm, intimate atmosphere. Artists love to play here, and guests feel right at home. With almost 1, 000 seats in the main theatre, it’s the second-largest theatre in the National Capital Region.

Since May 3, 1988 Centrepointe Theatre has hosted a vast array of performers from Canada and around the world, and has presented more Juno award-winning artists than any other theatre in the region. Many future superstars get their first opportunity to perform on Centrepointe’s stage.

Centrepointe Theatres is also host venue to shows that are produced and performed by community presenters. Please see our Community Presenters page for more information about a few of them.

Centrepointe StudioTheatre

On December 12, 2011 the new Centrepointe Studio Theatre was officially opened. The intimate theatre is a multi-configurable performance, rehearsal, and reception venue which seats between 199 – 236 theatre style. With a design based on the European ‘courtyard’ theatre, and with a gallery running around the entire playing area, there is a permanent arcade façade that can be used as a stage set, a space for audience members to sit behind the stage, or as a fully-reflective acoustic surface for live music events. Please see the 360-degree panorama on our Studio Theatre page for more information.

The arcade may also be completely masked with the Studio’s inventory of draperies. The studio theatre’s 236-seat configuration is comprised of: 1) a retractable ‘bleacher’ containing six rows of seating at stage level, 2) three rows of seats in a pit below stage level which are typically covered, and 3) two rows of fixed seats at gallery level. The movable seating can be configured for multiple performer/audience relationships: proscenium, stadium, arena, cabaret-style or ‘promenade’ seating. The studio theatre’s typical seating configuration is 199 seats.

As well as the above-mentioned performer/audience relationships, when the new studio’s seating is completely removed, it can become an intimate space that is perfect for any event, whether it be a private party, a film shoot/screening, or a reception.

Professional services are also available, such as marketing advice and a mentoring program for up-and-coming community groups. Competitive, non-profit rates are available which makes the space cost-effective, particularly for performing arts groups.

Shenkman Arts Centre

The Shenkman Arts Centre, which opened on June 18, 2009, is Ottawa’s only multidisciplinary arts facility offering services and programs in both English and French. The Centre, which is located in Ottawa East, is a creative hub where artists and audiences meet to create and explore the arts.

The Centre provides much-needed space for performing arts presentations and visual art exhibitions, as well as specialized spaces for hands-on instruction in the visual, performing, literary and media arts along with unique spaces for receptions and special events, all in pursuit of creative excellence.

From the 505-seat Harold Shenkman Hall to the 100-seat black box Richcraft Theatre, the Shenkman Arts Centre is alive with artistically and culturally diverse entertainment. You’ll be engaged and inspired by local, national and international performing artists who keep the stage aglow almost every night (or day) of the week.

Operated by the City of Ottawa, the Centre offers a diversity of programs and activities that bring art to life in the Shenkman Arts Centre, a variety attributed to a unique collaboration with the Centre’s Resident Arts Partners: AOE Arts Council, Gloucester Pottery School, MIFO (Mouvement d’implication francophone d’Orléans), Ottawa School of Art–Orléans Campus and OYP Theatre School. The Centre also houses the Ottawa-Gatineau Film and Television Development Corporation, Tara Luz Danse, Orléans Festival, and ARTicipate, a one-of-a-kind endowment fund that supports innovative programming at the Centre.

Come and enjoy some spectacular entertainment at Ottawa’s Theatres!
